Oolites Real oolitic sand from the Bahamas is an unique type of biogenic calcium carbonate which naturally forms on the banks of the Bahamas. The grains are smooth and spherical. The word oolite litarally means egg shaped. Due to it's renewable nature, it is an environmentally responsible alternative for reef sand. It is the ideal substrate for marine, reef and cichlid aquariums. It inhabits an unsurpassed buffering capacity and helps to maintain a natural pH of 8.2 without the constant addition of chemicals.
Our Oolites provides huge housing space for ammonia, nitrite and nitrate reducing bacteria. 1KG/2,2lb which equals 1.5L/0.4 Gallon offers over 1 million sq.cm. of surface area. The grain size is ideal for reef, cichlids, fishonly aquaria and refugiums. Another benefit is it's lack of silica, which helps to prevent diatom blooms in the aquarium.

Because of the shape and open structure of the Real oolitic sand from the Bahamas, the volume to weight ratio is totally different than sand that is sold as an oolite. The difference in volume is around 1.25 liter/0.33 gallon.
